Energy
TERRA Mileniul III Foundation's current activities in the energy sector are focused on promoting success stories in using renewable energy sources, as well as on public participation in the elaboration of national policies in the energy sector.
Activities: Energy
According to the Romanian Governmental Decision approving the National Strategy for Energy Efficiency, “energy saving represents the cheapest source of energy, non-polluting and easy to obtain, compared to fossil fuel or renewable energy sources”. At a national level, the average economic energy potential (calculated as an average between the economic potentials in economic sectors such as industry, transports, residential sector etc.) is currently evaluated to approximately 30-40%. The economic development cannot take place in a sustainable way without increasing energy efficiency. This way, decoupling increase of energetic resources consumption from the economic growth is ensured. [more]
Renewable energy sources
Renewable energy sources represent the sources that are naturally and continuously renewed. These sources are: the sun, the wind, thermal waters, waves and tide, the water temperature differences, running waters, biomass, bio-fuel.
Each renewable energy source can be exploited through different technologies to obtain thermal energy, electricity or bio-fuel. [more]

Is operated by wind power plants with vertical or horizontal axis. Wind power plants can be mounted in areas with a constant wind either separately or in wind farms. There small size wind farm capable of providing power supply to households. Intermittent wind problems are overcome with the installation of hybrid wind-solar, wind-hydro.

Using solar energy is by two main technologies:
a) solar collectors for heat and domestic hot water;
b) photovoltaic panels to get electricity.
These panels can be mounted on the roofs of the houses, blocks and outdoor. The only problem of this energy source is an intervals of night sky, fog, etc. The alternative for solar collectors is buying heat from other renewable sources, and if there photovoltaic panels alternative energy is storage in batteries for periods without wind or hybrid system using panels with other type as wind, hydro or diesel.

Thermal waters or heat generated by Earth is renewable energy that can be operated in two modes:
- Thermal waters (hot springs) can be exploited to probe the extraction / injection for heat / hot water. This method is used on an industrial scale.
- The heat generated by the Earth can be used to obtain heat / domestic hot water using heat pumps.

Hydropower has a long tradition in Romania and covers a wide range of energy requirements. National Recovery Strategy for Renewable Energy has the following data about the potential of hydropower: [more]
- All of wood, agricultural waste (corn cobs, husks of sunflower seeds, etc..), Sawdust is biomass. Biomass is used as fuel to produce heat and electricity.
Biofuels:
- Are a branch from biomass and industrial crops. Biofuels replace petroleum products (gasoline, diesel) and natural gas used in cars.
a) Biodiesel is a substitute of diesel and is produced from oleaginous plants (rapeseed, soybean, sunflower) [more]
